The Webster City Lynx basketball teams were back in action on Tuesday night, when they made the trip west to face off with long-time NCC rival Humboldt. The Humboldt girls entered with a 7-6 record, while the Humboldt boys entered with an 11-0 record, and ranked #3 in Class 3A in this week’s AP Poll.
Webster City started off the night in the girls game with a clean start, not committing the first turnover against the Humboldt press until the 2nd quarter, but things would unravel soon there after, as the turnovers snowballed and resulted in a 25-6 halftime lead for the Wildcats. Webster City would show fight in the 3rd quarter, cutting the lead to 33-19, but did not have the firepower to overcome the ‘Cats in a 47-26 loss.
The boys took the floor, looking to score their biggest win of the season against the third-ranked team in Class 3A. The Wildcats were seen as the three-point shooting team, but it was the Lynx who came out firing in the first half, building a 23-17 halftime lead. Humboldt would respond and took a 5-point lead at the end of the 3rd after a Cade Matson three at the buzzer. Webster City would continue to scrap and claw, holding a 45-43 lead after a Jamin Stuhr three with just under a minute to go. However, Humboldt would make one more play, as Caden Matson buried a 3 with 17 seconds to go and Ty McKinney’s game-winner was too strong as Humboldt held on for a 47-46 win.
Webster City returns to action on Friday, when they travel north to take on the Cowboys of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.
