The Eagle Grove wrestling team returned to tournament action on Saturday, when they made the long trip south on Highway 169 to Winterset to compete in the annual Gary Christensen Invitational. Teams in attendance included the host Huskies, Osage, Urbandale, Carlisle, Waukee, Woodward-Granger, Clarinda, ADM, Clarke (Osceola), Oskaloosa, Southwest Valley, Van Meter-Earlham, Martensdale-St. Marys, East Union and Southeast Warren.
The Eagles turned in their most impressive performance of the season, turning in a pair of runner-up finishes at 106 pounds and 120 pounds from Mack Morgan and Kaden Pritchard. Morgan fell to Carlisle’s Aiden Serrano in the 106 pound title match, while Pritchard fell to Waukee’s Cory Jones in the 120 pound title match. Jack Mendoza placed 4th at 195 pounds, and finished 3-2 on the day, with losses to Carlisle’s Josh Hemsted and Winterset’s Carter Smuck.
Isaac Olson placed 5th for the Eagles at 220 pounds, finishing 3-2 on the day with both losses coming against wrestlers from Urbandale. Jesus Baez placed 6th at 285 pounds, finishing the day 2-2. Eagle Grove got 7th place finishes with Connor Christopher and Trenton Sorenson at 126 pounds and 182 pounds, while Orlando Hernandez placed 8th at 160 pounds. Dustin Dawson, Brett Ascherl, Andrew Dencklau and Korey Anderson all competed for Eagle Grove but did not place, as the Eagles placed 6th with 121 points.
