The Webster City Lynx wrestling squad traveled to Hampton-Dumont-CAL on Thursday night, to compete in the second crucial North Central Conference match of the night. The winner of the dual, paired with an Algona loss to Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, would move into sole possession of first place in the NCC standings.
The night started at 182 pounds, as Hampton-Dumont-CAL started the night off with a major decision from Braden Hansen over Webster City’s Dylan Burnette-Bingham. The Lynx then reeled off back-to-back pins from CJ Hisler at 195 and Jaxon Cherry at 220, to take a 12-4 lead. HD-CAL’s Carter Heilskov then picked up a much-needed fall at 285 over Landon Griffin, to cut the score to 12-10.
The meet then turned to the lightweights, as Jayson Stevens picked up a first period fall at 106, before Webster City’s dynamic duo of Carson Doolittle and Cam Phetxoumphone picked up first period falls to put the Lynx 24-16. However, the Bulldogs would go on a hot streak, picking a fall from Jack Showalter, followed by decisions from Sean Heliskov and Taylor Maher to put HD-CAL back up 28-24.
Austin Mason briefly stopped the bleeding for the Lynx, picking up a first period fall at 145 pounds. But back-to-back falls from Jakyb Kapp and Carl Barkema sealed the win for the Bulldogs. Evan Estlund would finish off the match with a 5-1 decision over Tate Schmitt, to set the final at 40-33.
Webster City wrestling is back in action on Saturday, when they will compete in the Allie Morrison Duals at the Marshalltown Roundhouse.
