One of two crucial North Central Conference matchups on Thursday night, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows hosted the Algona Bulldogs for a dual at CGD High School, with possible NCC Dual Championship implications on the line. The Bulldogs entered tied atop the conference standings with Hampton-Dumont-CAL and Webster City, while CGD was tied for 4th with Humboldt.
The dual started at 195 pounds, as Algona’s Chase Roof picked up a 2nd period fall over the Cowboys Mason Allen to put Algona up 6-0. The two heaviest weights belonged to CGD, as Erick Perez picked up a 2-1 decision at 220 pounds, before Daniel Chavez picked up a quick fall at 285 pounds. The light weights then belonged to Algona, as Isaac Wilson picked up a major decision at 106 pounds, before Jacob Zabka and Tate Slagle picked up back-to-back falls, to give Algona a 22-9 advantage.
Algona’s Ian Fehr picked up his biggest win of the season, upsetting Ethan Traub at 126 pounds in a 5-2 decision to put the Bulldogs up 25-9. The Cowboys would storm back, as Caleb Seaba pulled an upset at 132 pounds, by getting the fall on Hayden Thompson. Cale Kirstein would then pick up a major decision win over Ashton Moreno. Algona would get two more wins, albeit just major decisions at 145 pounds and 152 pounds from Luke Carter and Brandon Harris.
That led the back-to-back punch of Garrett and Mack Seaba at 160 pounds and 170 pounds up in a crucial spot. Both brothers responded by picking up falls to cut the score to 33-31 in favor of Algona, with the match coming down to 182 pounds. Nash Lienemann got the call and answered the bell, picking up a 14-4 major decision over Jagger O’Neal to clinch a 35-33 win.
The CGD wrestling squad returns to action on Saturday, as they compete at the Jack Mendenhall Invitational at Ames High School.
