The South Hamilton Hawks finished up the 2021 portion of their basketball schedule on Tuesday night, as they made the trip east to face off with the Trojans of West Marshall. The Trojan women sat at 8-0 and ranked #9 in Class 3A according to the IGHSAU, while the West Marshall boys sat at 3-5 on the season.
South Hamilton’s girls, who had fell short in an upset bid against Roland-Story last Friday, got another crack at a ranked 3A foe in the undefeated Trojans. The game played out as a defensive stalemate, with both sides unable to muster efficient offenses. But, the play of senior forward Caleigh Hewitt proved to by a difference maker, as her 15 points brought South Hamilton to the cusp of the upset. However, it was not sealed until Hewitt knocked down two clutch free throws with just over a second remaining that sealed a 36-35 upset of the 9th-ranked Trojans.
The South Hamilton boys then took the floor, looking to rebound following a blowout loss to rival Roland-Story on Friday night, where the Hawks defense was torched for double-digit three-pointers. Matt Juber’s crew did get up off the matt, leading the Trojans by as many as 19 points, before late trips to the free thrown line sealed a 49-39 win over West Marshall. Landon Skartvedt was the Hawks top scorer, pouring 14 points to help secure South Hamilton’s 2nd win of the year.
The Hawks return to action following winter break by opening with Jaguars of Southeast Valley on January 4th.
