Clarion-Goldfield-Dows basketball splits doubleheader with Algona

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows made the trip north and west on Tuesday night, to face off with the Algona Bulldogs in North Central Conference play. The Bulldog girls were 2-5 entering the game, while Bulldog boys were 3-4 on the young season.

The girls game saw an Algona team ready to bounce back, following a blowout loss to Bishop Garrigan on Saturday, against a reeling CGD squad who had lost 3 in a row after starting 4-0. The Cowgirls and Bulldogs kept things close in the first half, as Algona held a 23-17 lead at the break. In the 2nd half, the Algona press continuously forced turnovers, and the play of the Bulldogs starting 5 carried them to a 50-31 win. Algona’s Lillian Etherington led all scorers with 12 points off of 4, three-pointers. Elliot Ennis led CGD in scoring with 11 off the bench.

The #9 Cowboys took the floor against a high-powered Algona squad that while only 3-4, was averaging 70 points per contest coming in. It was evident early on that the Cowboys were up to the task, absolutely stifling the Bulldog offense. Connor State put together one of the best nights of his career, pouring in 30 points off of 14 field goals to give the Cowboys a 62-30 win over Algona. Jaxon Carpenter also finished with 12 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals.

Clarion-Goldfield-Dows returns to action in the new year, as they will host Hampton-Dumont-CAL on January 7th.
