The Eagle Grove basketball teams made the trip north on Tuesday night to face off with the Bulldogs of Lake Mills in Top of Iowa conference play. The Lake Mills girls entered with a 2-4 record, while the boys entered with a 5-0 record, and were ranked #10 in the Class 1A AP Poll.
Eagle Grove’s girls kicked off the evening against the Bulldogs, in search of win #1 on the season. The Eagles only trailed 22-11 at the end of the 1st quarter, but the Lake Mills defense strengthened it’s grip, to hold a 37-16 halftime lead. Lake Mills continued to ride its efficient offensive play to a 64-34 win, as Taylor Vanek led all scorers with 16 points.
The boys then took center stage as Eagle Grove looked to pull the massive upset of the #10 team in Class 1A. However, the Bulldogs stifling defense and opportunistic offense, jumped on the Eagles from the get go, holding a 22-3 lead after one, and a 44-9 lead at halftime. Lake Mills would go on to win 66-16. Wyatt Helming and Denton Kingland finished with 17 points and 11 points for the Bulldogs.
Eagle Grove returns to action on Friday, as they host former North Central Conference rival Humboldt, at Eagle Grove Elementary School.
