Webster City splits doubleheader with Hampton-Dumont-CAL

The Webster City Lynx basketball teams made the trip east on Tuesday night, to face off with the Bulldogs of Hampton-Dumont-CAL in North Central Conference action. The Lynx girls entered still looking for win #1, while the boys were looking to get back to .500 on the season.

Nicole Muhlenbrach’s squad was able to hang with the Bulldogs through the first quarter, only trailing 12-8 at the end of the frame. However, Hampton-Dumont-CAL was able to ratchet up the intensity on both ends of the floor, holding a 25-16 lead at halftime, and refusing to let off the gas for a 67-31 win.

The Webster City boys then took the court against an undefeated Bulldogs squad, and came out firing right out of the gates. A 9-point 1st quarter courtesy of Jaime Grossoehme gave the Lynx an 18-15 lead over Hampton-Dumont-CAL. The teams battled neck and neck the rest of the way, with the Lynx holding a 41-40 halftime lead and ending regulation with a 51-51 tie to send it to overtime. There, it was free throws, which hampered Webster City all night, that put them over the top at the end for a 64-54 overtime victory.

Next action for the Lynx will be on Friday night, when they make the trip north to Kossuth County to face Algona.
