The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows basketball teams hit the northern trek on Tuesday night, to face off with Lions of Clear Lake in North Central Conference play. The matchup showcased a golden opportunity for both CGD squads to pick up signature wins.
For the Cowgirls, it wasn’t to be as they 8th-ranked Lions raced out to a big 1st quarter lead, scoring 30 in the opening frame, and using its stifling press the rest of the way, to score a 62-27 win over CGD. Clear Lake senior Jayden Ainley finished with a game-high 22 points, while the Cowgirls Lexie Lane led CGD with 12 points.
The boys then took the center stage, as CGD looked to pick up a statement win over the 2nd-ranked Lions. Defenses ruled the first half, with Clear Lake holding a 19-18 lead at halftime. The 2nd half then became the Jaxon Carpenter show, as the senior point guard attacked Clear Lake at will, en route to a 24-point performance, securing a 49-39 upset of the #2 team in Class 3A.
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows will be back in action on Friday night, when they take on county rival Belmond-Klemme.
