Mark Reiland, a two-time state champion wrestler from Eagle Grove and a 1991 NCAA national champion for the Iowa Hawkeyes, passed away at age 52 on Wednesday. Reiland was also a former head coach of Iowa City West wrestling program.
Reiland, who was a 4-time state qualifier for Eagle Grove High School, competing for his father Marv Reiland, a member of the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame, won state championships at 145 pounds in 1986 and 155 pounds in 1987 for the Eagles, finishing 69-1 in his final two seasons.
Following high school, Reiland moved on to wrestle for the Iowa Hawkeyes and coach Dan Gable. There, Reiland claimed a national championship in 1991 at 167 pounds over Ohio State’s Kevin Randleman. Reiland finished his career as a two-time All-American.
From there, Reiland became the head wrestling coach at Iowa City West, building the Trojans into a wrestling powerhouse. In his 17 years, the Trojans won two traditional state titles, 5 dual meet state titles, and produced 84 state placers, 22 state champions and 13 runners-up before retiring in 2018.
Reiland was inducted into the Iowa Wrestling Hall of Fame in 2016.
