The South Hamilton basketball teams opened their Heart of Iowa season against the Perry Bluejays on Friday night. The matchup resulted in a pair of wins for the Hawks, as they picked up decisive wins in the men’s and women’s games against the newest members of the Heart of Iowa Conference.
South Hamilton’s girls got things kicked off, albeit with a slow start as they only led 13-7 by the end of the first quarter. However, a 22-point 2nd quarter saw the Hawks bolt out to a 35-14 halftime lead. The Bluejays were able to stifle scoring in the 3rd quarter, holding the Hawks to 10 3rd quarter points, before an evenly scored 4th quarter preserved a decisive South Hamilton win. Makenna Galetich led the way with 19 points, while Hallee Feaker scored 17 points with 2, three-pointers.
The South Hamilton boys took the floor, in search of their first win of the season against the Bluejays. The Hawks jumped out to a big 1st quarter lead, holding a 23-10 advantage after 1, but just a 29-21 halftime lead. However, a big 3rd quarter helped propel the Hawks to a 65-45 win. All South Hamilton starters finished in double figures, with Jonathan Drake leading the way with 13 points and a pair of three-pointers.
Next action for the South Hamilton squads will be on Tuesday, when they host the Greene County Rams at Jim Marsh Court. The girls tipoff at 6, with the boys to follow.
