Clarion-Goldfield-Dows opened conference play on Friday night, as they welcomed the Gaels of Fort Dodge, St. Edmond to Clarion. The Gaels women entered with a record of 0-2, while Gaels men entered with a record of 1-0.
The Cowgirls were locked in a defensive struggle throughout most of the night, as they only led the Gaels by a score of 11-8 after the 1st quarter. A dominant 2nd quarter defensively saw St. Edmond’s only score a single point as the Cowgirls held a 20-9 halftime lead. The 2nd half saw CGD’s offense begin to take over, as the Cowgirls pulled away for a 46-24 victory. Lexie Lane led all scorers with 12 points, while freshman Elliot Ennis added 11 points as well.
The Cowboys then took to the floor against the Gaels, in a game that lived up to its billing. CGD jumped out to a 23-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 38-25 heading into the locker room. The Gaels offense picked up in the 2nd half, but it was too little, too late as the Cowboys picked up a 70-61 win over St. Edmond. Connor State led all scorers with 18 points, while Coady Olson and Jaxon Carpenter combined for 31 points altogether.
Next action for Clarion-Goldfield-Dows will be on Friday, when they make the short trip south to Webster City to take on the Lynx. The girls will tipoff at 6 PM, with the boys to follow.
