The Webster City Lynx wrestling team opened their season on Thursday night, with a trip north to Algona, to partake in a triangular that included conference foes Algona and Fort Dodge, St. Edmond.
The Lynx opened the night against Algona, and at the 138-pound weight class, freshman Luke Estlund opened up his varsity career with an 11-9 win to put the Lynx ahead 3-0. Algona would then follow up with 3 consecutive decisions to take a 9-3 lead, which would be all the farther ahead the Bulldogs would get, as Brady Jenssen’s pin at 160 pounds tied the score at 9. The Lynx and Bulldogs battled back and forth, before the heavier weights began taking over for Chad Hisler’s squad. The dual concluded with Class 2A #1 at 120, Webster City’s Cam Phetxoumphone, and Class 2A #6 at 113, Algona’s Jacob Zabka, meeting at the 126 weight class. Phetxoumphone would pull out a 19-6 win over Zabka, to give the Lynx a 46-26 win over Algona.
Webster City would then face a short-handed St. Edmond squad, that saw 6 forfeits, while 4 Lynx wrestlers picked up wins by fall, en route to a 66-3 win over the Gaels.
Next action for the Lynx wrestling squad will be on Saturday, when they will partake in the DCG Mustang Invitational at Dallas Center-Grimes High School in Grimes.
