#8 Webster City season ends in Quarterfinals to #2 Cedar Rapids Xavier, 24-13

Webster City traveled east to Cedar Rapids on Friday night to face off with the Saints of Cedar Rapids, Xavier in Class 4A Quarterfinal action. The Saints, ranked #2 in the final Radio Iowa poll, were seen as the top contender for the 4A crown with North Scott’s loss to Decorah in the first round.

Both teams traded punts on their opening possessions, before Xavier running back Christian Stanek ripped off a 57-yard touchdown run to put the Saints up 7-0, halfway through the 1st quarter. Webster City would respond on the ensuing drive, marching 65 yards and capitalizing with a 9-yard touchdown run from Jaxon Cherry, to tie the score at 7-7. The Saints would reclaim the lead with a 23-yard field goal from Trysten Vasquez, to go up 10-7. Xavier would put together a critical touchdown drive right before half, as Alex Neal connected with Spencer Mesch on a 6-yard touchdown pass, to put the Saints up 17-7 at halftime.

Webster City would open the 2nd half with the football and took up almost 3/4th’s of the quarter, capping the drive off with a 4-yard touchdown run from Jaxon Cherry, to bring the score to 17-13 after the missed PAT. The Saints would respond on their ensuing drive, as Christian Stanek rushed for his 2nd touchdown on the night from 19 yards out, to put Xavier up for good, 24-13.

The Lynx finish their season at 8-3, with a district title and a playoff win in their first season in the newly-minted Class 4A. Cedar Rapids Xavier advances to the 4A Semifinals in the UNI Dome, where they will face the Winterset Huskies at 7 PM on Thursday Night.
