The Webster City Lynx came into Friday night with a district title already sealed, and looking to improve their playoff positioning in Class 4A. Standing in their way was the Monarchs of Denison-Schleswig, the first time the two sides have met since 1953.
Webster City got out of the gate quick, as Connor Hanson scored on a 6-yard touchdown run to put the Lynx up 7-0. On the ensuing Lynx drive, it was Jaxon Cherry’s turn to run, as he broke off a 70-yard touchdown run to put the Lynx up 14-0. Cherry would score once again towards the end of the quarter, to put the Lynx up 20-0. However, the Monarchs got on the board at the very end of the quarter, as Luke Wiebers hit Matthew Weltz for a 70-yard touchdown pass to set the score at 20-7.
Jaxon Cherry answered on the ensuing drive with his 3rd touchdown of the night to put the Lynx up 28-7. Denison-Schleswig answered back with another big pass, this time from Wiebers to Jake Fink for a 40-yard touchdown, to cut the score to 28-14. Webster City wouldn’t allow it any closer, as Jaxon Cherry broke off his 4th touchdown of the night from 50 yards, and CJ Hisler ran an interception back 35 yards for a touchdown, to put the Lynx up 42-14 at halftime.
The Lynx would add Jaxon Cherry’s 5th touchdown of the night in the 3rd quarter, as well as Austin Mason would score in the quarter as well, to give the Lynx a 56-14 win over Denison-Schleswig. Webster City’s win moved them to 7th in the Class 4A RPI, and the Lynx will host the Norwalk Warriors in the first round of the Class 4A Playoffs on Friday night.
