The last time Iowa State won a game at Bill Snyder Family Stadium in Manhattan, Kansas, George W. Bush had just won re-election for a 2nd term as President of the United States. It had been 17 years since the Cyclones had beaten Kansas State in Manhattan, but the streak ended Saturday night.
Iowa State started out of the box swinging for the fences, as Breece Hall ripped off a 75-yard touchdown run on the first play of the game to put Iowa State a 7-0 lead. A Greg Eisworth interception soon thereafter set Iowa State up with the first of four field goals by Andrew Mevis, to put the Cyclones up 10-0. Kansas State would strike back on the ensuing drive, on a 40-yard touchdown pass from Skylar Thompson to Phillip Brooks to cut the score to 10-7. The Wildcats had a chance to tie the game, but a missed Taiten Winkel field goal lead to an 80-yard touchdown drive, capped off by a Breece Hall 1-yard run to give Iowa State a 17-7 lead. An Andrew Mevis field goal as time expired in the first half gave the Cyclones a 20-7 halftime lead.
The Wildcats punted to start the second half, and Iowa State marched the length of the field once again, and capped the drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Brock Purdy to Sean Shaw Jr., to put the Cyclones up 27-7. Kansas State would score touchdowns on back-to-back possessions, but Andrew Mevis field goals responded to each one, to seal a 33-20 win for Iowa State.
The Cyclones move to 4-2 on the season with the win, and will host #8 Oklahoma State in Jack Trice Stadium on Saturday at 2:30 PM.
