Webster City welcomed in another early season test on Friday as the Go-Hawks of Waverly-Shell Rock entered Lynx Field. The Go-Hawks were ranked #6 in last week’s Radio Iowa poll. Webster City came into Friday off of a 42-0 drubbing of Boone the previous week.
For most of the 1st quarter, the game was a stalemate, until Waverly-Shell Rock put together a long scoring drive that was capped off by an Asa Newsome 22-yard touchdown run to put Waverly-Shell Rock up 7-0. Halfway through the 2nd quarter, the Go-Hawks struck again, as a 59-yard pass from quarterback Grant Halverson to Layne McDonald, that setup a Halverson quarterback sneak to put Waverly-Shell Rock up 14-0. The Go-Hawks would add a field goal to go up 17-0.
Webster City did not lie down, as the Lynx recovered a fumble at the end of the first half. The very next play had Ty McKinney find tight end JJ Moore for a 34-yard touchdown pass to bring the score to 17-7. However, the Go-Hawks struck again before half thanks to a pair of big plays, and Ryan Folkerts punched in a 3-yard touchdown to send the game to halftime at 24-7.
A scoreless 3rd quarter led to a 4th quarter that saw Waverly-Shell Rock strike the decisive blow as Grant Halverson hit Ryan Folkerts for a 22-yard touchdown to put the Go-Hawks up 31-7. Webster City did add a late touchdown on a throw from Ty McKinney to Jaxon Cherry to set the final at 31-14.
Waverly-Shell Rock will face 2020 Class 3A quarterfinalist West Delaware next Friday. Webster City will close out non-district play against Mason City next Friday.
