The Clarion-Goldfield-Dows volleyball tournament has been a staple tournament that signifies the beginning of the volleyball season in northern Iowa. The host school has won the tournament title for the past 4 seasons, and on Saturday, the Cowgirls made it 5 in a row.
In their first game action of the season, the three-time defending state qualifiers did not skip a beat, as they did not lose a single set on Saturday, sweeping every foe by a final of 2-0. The Cowgirls opened by sweeping the other Wright County schools in Belmond-Klemme and Eagle Grove, before shutting down South Hamilton after that.
The Cowgirls took down Estherville-Lincoln Central and North Butler in the afternoon slate, before facing off with Clear Lake in the final matchup of the day. It was another match the Cowgirls took by the score of 2-0 to lockup the 5th straight tournament title for CGD.
CGD was lead by junior Lexie Lane, who finished with a tournament-high 37 kills for the Cowgirls. She was followed by junior Clarissa Hasty, who added 27 kills of her own. Lane also finished with a team high 12 aces in the tournament as well. Senior Nikki Kapka and junior Karlee Lehman finished with 33 assists and 29 assists, respectively.
The Cowgirls will host their first regular match of the season as they welcome the 7-1 Webster City Lynx to Clarion, in a crucial, early-season matchup in the North Central Conference. KQWC will bring coverage of the game on Thursday, starting at 6:55 PM.
