Paramount Pictures and Sega of America(NEW YORK) — Sonic the Hedgehog outran The Call of the Wild and was able to hang on to number one for the second week in a row. The animated feature based on the classic Sega video game delivered an estimated $26.3 million. That pushes its tally stateside past $106 million, ranking it as the fourth largest video game adaptation domestically of all-time.
The film added an estimated $38.3 million overseas, bringing its worldwide totals to over $203 million.
Sonic got a run for its money from one of this weekend’s new releases, Call of the Wild, the latest cinematic adaptation of Jack London’s classic book, starring Harrison Ford. The film finished ahead of expectations with an estimated $24.8 million for a second place finish.
The weekend’s other major new release, the Katie Holmes-led horror sequel Brahms: The Boy II, narrowly edged out Bad Boys for Life for fourth place with an estimated $5.9 million.
Birds of Prey copped third place with an estimated $7 million in its third week of release. The film also added an estimated $10 million overseas, bringing its global totals to $173.7 million.
Rounding out the top five was the aforementioned Bad Boys for Life, grabbing an estimated $5.86 million. Its domestic earnings now stand at around $191 million. Internationally, the film nabbed an estimated $8.1 million, bringing its overseas tally to $200 million and a worldwide total of $390 million.
Elsewhere, Emma — a film based on Jane Austin’s 1815 novel of the same name and starring Anya Taylor-Joy, Bill Nighy and Johnny Flynn — delivered $230,000 from five locations, for a $46,000 per theater average. Overseas, where it had opened previously, brought in an estimated $2.4 million, bringing its international tally to $8.4 million.
