Niko Tavernise/© 2019 Warner Bros. Entertainment Inc. All Rights Reserved(LOS ANGELES) — Hollywood’s biggest night unfolds Sunday night at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, where the 92nd Annual Academy Awards will take place. Before the big night, broadcast live on ABC, here’s a quick recap.
Todd Phillips’ Joker leads with 11 nominations overall, while 1917, The Irishman and Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood follow closely behind, with 10 nominations each.
Let’s take a look at the nominees for Best Picture:
Joker
Oscar-nominated Hollywood filmmaker Todd Phillips has worked on a range of movie genres, but Joker broke a box office record and set a high bar for awards season. Phillips, who directed, co-wrote and produced the Batman villain origin story, stripped down the comic book villain nearly literally to the bare bones — Joaquin Phoenix’s gaunt, haunting, painful performance as failed comedian Arthur Fleck was the only special effect the movie needed.
Parasite
Acclaimed director Bong Joon Ho spins an intense, nearly inverse fairytale of a family whose plans to take advantage of a wealthy family spins out of control.
Ford vs. Ferrari
Academy Award-winners Matt Damon and Christian Bale play, respectively, American car designer Carroll Shelby and British-born driver Ken Miles, who in 1966 were tasked with the seemingly impossible mission of building a race car for Ford that could compete, and beat, Italian automaker Ferrari at the 24 Hours of Le Mans road race in France.
Jojo Rabbit
New Zealand director Taika Waititi wrote and directed this “anti-hate satire,” which earned six nominations, including Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Picture. Waititi also played a young Hitler Youth’s imaginary best friend: Adolf himself. Scarlett Johansson earned a supporting actress nomination, one of two for her this year, for playing the boy’s mother.
1917
Sam Mendes’ World War I epic centers on two British soldiers who are in a desperate race across enemy territory with an urgent message that could save thousands of soldiers, including the brother of one of the messengers.
Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood
Quentin Tarantino’s love letter to an end of an era in Tinseltown features an Oscar-nominated supporting performance from Brad Pitt as the stuntman to a fading small-screen star, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, who was also nominated for his efforts.
Little Women
Writer-director Greta Gerwig was snubbed in the directing category, but her adaptation of the classic novel scored with moviegoers and Academy voter. Laura Dern snagged one of her two nominations this year for her portrayal of Marmee, and Florence Pugh was also recognized for playing Amy.
Marriage Story
Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Noah Baumbach called the shots on this intense film about a marriage falling apart, which earned best actor and actress nominations, respectively, for Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson, and a supporting actress nomination for Laura Dern.
The Irishman
Martin Scorsese’s epic saga of organized crime in postwar America features Robert De Niro’s Frank Sheeran, a WWII veteran-turned hitman who had a hand, or a trigger finger, in many major events in modern American history. The film earned supporting acting nominations for De Niro’s co-stars, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci, and director accolades for Scorsese.
