‘SNL” cold open shows the impeachment trial “you wish had happened”

Will Heath/NBC(NEW YORK) — In response to the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump, in which Republican senators rejected witnesses, Saturday Night Live opened this weekend’s show by presenting “The Trial You Wish Had Happened.”

In SNL‘s version of the trial, Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts is immediately replaced by TV judge Greg Mathis — played by Kenan Thompson — who declares, “We ’bout to do this trial right!”

The trial, intended to look like a reality TV show, also features Beck Bennett’s “sneaky little Mitch” McConnell, who reminds Americans that “all men are innocent after proven guilty.”

Next, Thompson asks for the President’s defense: GOP Senator Lindsey Graham, played by Kate McKinnon,

“Now I may be a simple country simpleton, but I have studied this from top to bottom,” McKinnon says. before explaining, “I studied my chances of getting reelected and it ain’t gonna happen unless I kiss Mr. Trump’s grits and tickle his biscuits.”

A frustrated Mathis then demands to hear witnesses, because “that’s how a damn trial works.”

After listening to John Bolton and Hunter Biden, played respectively by Cecily Strong and Pete Davidson, Thompson asks to hear from the President himself.

Enter Alec Baldwin’s Trump, pushing a walker, like disgraced media mogul Harvey Weinstein has been seen with at his trial.

“Your honor, I’m a very sick man. How could I withhold aid from the Ukraine,” Baldwin insists. “I can barely get around the house.”

“President Trump are you trying to Weinstein me right now?” barks Thompson.

“In which sense, because Harvey and I overlap in a few areas,” replies Baldwin before stating, “My defense is very simple your honor. I’m guilty, but it ain’t no thang.”

Fearing Trump will be found guilty, McConnell, Graham and Bolton belt out “Send in the Clowns.”
