Disney(NEW YORK) — Dumbo didn’t deliver the $50 million-plus Disney expected in its opening weekend, but Tim Burton’s live-action remake of the 1941 animated classic still managed to finish at the top of the box office with an estimated $45 million debut. While beating recent Disney films like Christopher Robin, Alice Through the Looking Glass and Pete’s Dragon, which debuted with $24.6 million, $26.9 million and $21.5 million, respectively, Dumbo failed to match Cinderella‘s $67.9 debut back in 2015, and fell far short of the $174.7 million-dollar debut of 2017’s life-action Beauty and the Beast remake.
Overseas, Dumbo — starring Danny DeVito, Colin Farrell and Michael Keaton — grabbed an estimated $71 million.
Jordan Peele’s Us, dropping to second place in its second week of release, earned an estimated $33.6 million, bringing its totals stateside to over $128 million. Internationally, the horror flick added an estimated $22.6 million, bringing its global tally to just under $175 million.
In third place was Disney-Marvel’s Captain Marvel, delivering an estimated $20.5, bringing its stateside totals to upward of $353 million in its fourth week of release. With its overseas take currently at $368.8 million, the film is less than $10 million shy of becoming the seventh film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to reach the $1 billion mark.
Disney is the parent company of Marvel and ABC News.
The teen drama Five Feet Apart landed in fourth place its third week out with an estimated $6.25 million. Rounding out the top five was the second of this week’s new wide releases, Unplanned, with an estimated $6.1 million debut.
Not even an all-star cast including Matthew McConaughey, Snoop Dogg, Isla Fisher, Zac Efron, Martin Lawrence and Jonah Hill could keep The Beach Bum afloat. It foundered with an estimated $1.8 million, 10th-place debut.
In limited release, Diane — starring Mary Kay Place, Andrea Martin and Joyce Van Patten — opened in three theaters with an estimated $27,043 total.
