May 4th KQWC Sports Rundown

Tough day for area high school sports yesterday as thunderstorms swept through much of north central Iowa and brought the sports day to a near screeching halt.

Thursday High School Sports

We did have one local team, however, that did manage to get their event in before the storms rolled through. The Webster City Lynx boys golf team hosted the Lynx Invite at Briggs Woods Golf Course at 1:30PM Thursday. The Lynx were joined by Gilbert, Nevada, Clear Lake, and Ballard. Webster City would finish in 4th place with a team score of 355 strokes, 39 behind meet champion Nevada. Defending 3A state champion Tommy Doyle of Gilbert took medalist honors with a round of 74 but Lynx Junior Nathan Ferrel was just one shot back with a 75.

Of the 15 high school athletic events scheduled for yesterday, 14 ended up being cancelled or postponed. The Lynx and Clarion Goldfield Dows Cowboys boys and girls track and field teams were set to take part in the North Central Conference meets but both were postponed to Monday. The girls meet will remain at Webster City High School next week but the boys meet, which had been set to take place at Dodger Stadium in Fort Dodge, will now move to Humboldt High School.

The Lynx boys and girls tennis teams were set to meet the St. Edmond Gaels and those meets have been rescheduled for Tuesday.

The Lynx boys soccer team had its second consecutive game this week called off as they were set to visit Boone yesterday. That match has not yet been rescheduled.

The Eagle Grove Eagles Track and Field Teams were all set to head to Lake Mills for the Top of Iowa Conference meet. That event was postponed until Tuesday May 8th and it will be held at Lake Mills High School.

The Eagle Boys and Girls Golf teams also had their triangular golf meets with Lake Mills and Bishop Garrigan scheduled for yesterday permanently cancelled.

For the South Hamilton Hawks, the Comet Coed Invitational at North Polk, which the Hawks boys and girls track and field teams were scheduled to take part, was permanently cancelled.

And the Hawks boys golf team had their 6 team meet in Story City rescheduled until to Monday.

In HS Action Friday

The weather not looking like it will be an issue today as the forecast calling for a 0 percent chance of precipitation. The lone events on the schedule are a pair of golf meets involving three area schools. The Eagle Grove Eagles and South Hamilton Hawks girls golf teams will meet at Eagle Grove Country Club. The Eagles, Hawks, and CGD boys will take part in a triangular meet at Jewell Golf and Country Club.

Iowa Hawkeyes

The 26 and 15 Iowa Hawkeye Baseball team will get a stiff test this weekend in Iowa City. The Hawks will host the 12th ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys for a 3 game set that kicks off today at 6:05PM.

It’s been a tough second half of the season for the Hawkeyes softball team as they have lost 10 of their last 11 games to drop to 20 and 28 in 2018. Iowa will have a chance to right the ship over the weekend at home as they host the Purdue Boilermakers for a 3 game set that kicks off at 5PM this afternoon.

Iowa State Cyclones

The Cyclones softball team is coming off of a 3 game sweep on the road at the hands of the Baylor Bears last week that dropped them to 22 and 28 overall. Now it’s off to Lawrence for a 3-game set with the Kansas Jayhawks in the Big 12 regular season finale. That series begins today at 5PM.

Happy Kentucky Oaks Day! Run for the Roses tomorrow!!
