April 10th KQWC Sports Rundown

Major League Baseball:

The weather became a factor in Major League Baseball again yesterday. The Chicago Cubs had been scheduled to open play at Wrigley Field for the first time this season against Pittsburgh but that game was postponed to today. The 5 and 4 Cubs will host the Pirates at 1:20 this afternoon.

The St. Louis Cardinals were edged at home by the Milwaukee Brewers 5 to 4. The Cards back at tonight from Busch Stadium with Carlos Martinez on the mound against the Brewers at 7:15PM.

The Kansas City Royals offense came to life Monday night in a 10-zero win over the Seattle Mariners at Kauffman stadium. The Royals host Seattle tonight at 7:15.

And the Minnesota Twins bats went silent against Justin Verlander and the Houston Astros Monday night at Target Field. The Twins now sit at 4 and 4 ahead of tonight’s matchup with the Astros at 7:10 from Target Field.

Iowa Cubs:

In the minor league report, the 1 and 2 Chicago Cubs had their series finale with Oklahoma City postponed until later in the season Monday. They’ll hit the road today to kick off a 3 game series against the Nashville Sound.

High School Sports:

More cancellations and postponements today but not all high school spring sports will be shelved today. The Eagle Grove Eagles and Clarion Goldfield Dows Cowgirls Golf teams were set for a heads up match at Eagle Grove Country Club but that has been permanently cancelled.

The Cowboys boys track team had its meet at Clear Lake cancelled as well.

The Eagle Grove Eagles and Clarion Goldfield Dows girls track teams were set to take part in the Cowgirl Relays in Clarion but that meet cancelled.

The Webster City Lynx girls soccer team was set to host its first home game but that match against Garner Hayfield Ventura has been rescheduled for May 15th.

And the Webster City Lynx track and field teams will have a change of venue for tonight. The Lynx girls were set to head to Algona for a meet but that has been postponed to April 16th and the boys had their meet at Southeast Valley cancelled. Both Webster City Lynx track and field teams are now headed to Jefferson for the Greene County meet tonight.

Girls Tennis at North Polk for tonight still a go as of right now.

Cyclones Spring Game Cancelled:

Iowa State Cyclone football enthusiasts will have to wait September 1st to see their favorite team in action. Usually the second Saturday in April is reserved for the annual spring football game at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames where an intersquad scrimmage gives the Cyclone fanatics a preview of what their team will look like come fall. This year, however, the Iowa State Cyclone spring game has been cancelled due to the impending weather that is expected in central Iowa Saturday. Head coach Matt Campbell stated that the only thing that bothers him is that the fans will miss out on a popular event.

The Cyclones will hold an indoor scrimmage Saturday and the next time they’re in full uniform will be their 2018 season opener against South Dakota State on September 1st.

Webster City Lynx Tennis Season Preview:

Well the story of Webster City Lynx boys tennis goes very similar to that of the girls this year. They’re looking to bounce back from a tough year last year but mother nature keeps snowing on their parade. 1st year head coach Mike Ross takes over a Lynx boys team that went 1 and 10 overall last year despite winning 19 individuals or doubles matches. Ross spoke about the players he’s got back from last year and what to expect.

Coach Ross is also working hard to get his players the practice they need despite having limited use of the outdoor tennis courts due to the spring weather.

The Lynx boys already had their home meet against Hampton-Dumont cancelled last Thursday while also having to reschedule Monday’s meet at St. Edmond’s. As of now Webster City boys tennis should get their first match in on Thursday at home against North Polk.
