Chris Hemsworth on “Thor: Ragnarok”: “We had to destroy the old to invent something new”

Marvel Studios(LOS ANGELES) — Thor: Ragnarok, the third film in Marvel’s Thor franchise, got its premiere in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

The movie has a different tone that previous Thor films — with humor, a mix characters from the Marvel universe, and a short-haired protagonist. At the premiere, star Chris Hemsworth described the film as having “a lot more fun, a lot more humor [and] a grander sense of adventure…”.

It’s a change for which the Avengers series actor was thankful.

“It’s a recreation – we had to destroy the old to invent something new,” Hemsworth said, thanking director Taikia Waititi, who the actor joked, “was as bored of me as I was of me.”

Explained Hemsworth, “Anytime it felt familiar we did something different, and anytime it felt predictable, we broke it.”

Mark Ruffalo, who reprises his role as Bruce Banner/The Hulk in the move, thinks its lighter tone is perfect. “It’s way more lighthearted, it doesn’t take any of it too seriously, which is exactly what we need in this moment in time,” he said.

Making dramatic changes to a franchise isn’t always something studios are excited about, but Waititi said, “I wanted to put my own stamp on it, my own kind of humor and tone, and Marvel was receptive and supportive.”

He also said he wanted to make a change for Hemsworth’s sake. Calling the star a, “beautifully fun person” and, “the kind of person you want to go on an adventure with,” Waititi said he told Hemsworth, “Just be who you are and the audience is gonna love you.”

Of course one change had a positive benefit for the director — Thor’s newly short locks.

“I’m ‘pro’ whatever’s faster to get Chris through makeup,” he joked.  “So, short hair.”

Thor: Ragnarok opens November 2.
